Produce Grown for Local Food Pantry

This past summer The Community Church in Ada’s garden (formerly used for the Children’s Garden program through the Ada Parks and Recreation Department) became a growing site for the Good News Gardens program organized by Plainsong Farm. We offer a huge thank-you to Eileen Boekestein who coordinated this project!

As the gardening season has come to an end, we rejoice with Plainsong Farm and all the church and household gardeners who participated in the Good News Gardens program.  As in every growing season there have been ups and downs; enough teeming tomatoes to share and bunnies that decimated early sprouts.  Plainsong’s Good News Gardens Program nurtured a community of over fifty gardens across the state of Michigan, including here at The Community.

Through the experiences and questions of the Good News Gardens Cohort, we’ve all encountered new garden pests, expanded our understanding of our local food system, and witnessed the wild work of the Spirit. Each week the Good News Garden participants received educational gardening videos created by Plainsong’s Farm Director, Mike Edwardson.  Each week Church gardeners were invited to consider how Christianity’s sacred stories illuminate our relationships with land, food, and food access along with Rev. Nurya Love Parish, Plainsong’s Executive Director.

Here at The Community, we grew an abundance of fresh produce that was donated weekly to the Flat River Outreach Ministries food pantry to nourish our neighbors in need. Multiple families helped to water, weed, harvest, and deliver the produce, while others engaged weekly with the discipleship resources. Thank you to all who participated in this program in whatever small way. In a time of deep darkness, together we grew hope.
